TSP654II AirPrint™ Receipt Printer Ethernet

TSP654II AirPrint™ Receipt Printer Ethernet

TSP654II AirPrint™ Receipt Printer

The Star TSP654II is the first and only 80 & 58mm receipt and ticket AirPrint POS printer certified by Apple.

AirPrint is an Apple technology providing easy mobile printing solutions for Apple iPad, iPhone, iPod and MacBook users on any private network. Using AirPrint, retailers can print without installing specific printer drivers allowing freedom of movement with the ability to print to Star’s TSP654II from anywhere within the business network system. AirPrint support comes preinstalled on iOS devices, allowing the user to discover and output to the desired printer.

Star’s TSP654II perfectly fits the bill to be the first certified Apple AirPrint POS printer with its fast 300 mm per second print speed, high quality 203 dpi print, compact footprint and aesthetic design. It can be used in vertical or horizontal mode and includes a wall mount bracket in the box as standard. The ergonomic design with splash proof cover option and easy “Drop-In & Print” paper loading make it perfect for Tablet POS in retail or hospitality. The printer is available with charcoal black or ultra white casing and will match the Star CB2002 ultra white and black cash drawer options (Please note: AirPrint has limited ability to control cash drawers).

The TSP654II AirPrint will provide Ethernet & WiFi use with an Apple WiFi alliance certified dongle (EDIMAX EW-7811UN) included in the box with EU &UK supplies

AirPrint users and developers should be aware of the limitations of Apple’s AirPrint, which was primarily designed for domestic use and not Tablet POS business use. Star offers a number of developer tools for ISVs and software houses such as Star PassPRNT which could provide a more effective solution providing status back to the application as the key advantage.

Star PassPRNT Development Tool vs AirPrint Solution for the iOS Developer

Status feedback for the retailer PassPRNT informs the user if there are any printing issues  – print job complete etc. – this is not so with AirPrint

User Comfort  PassPRNT & StarPRNT SDKs can provide a simple print button whilst AirPrint is not so simple. AirPrint will typically print a complete web page and then the user has to use the OS functions to send to AirPrint. PassPRNT can be triggered by a link on the page, avoiding confusion over which page to print.

Cash Drawer Control  – AirPrint has limited ability to control cash drawers

Performance – PassPRNT is faster.  AirPrint can take up to 20 seconds to produce the printed receipt

PassPRNT gives more print control – Apple’s rules determine how the receipt is printed e.g. max receipt length is set by Apple. The final receipt can therefore look clumsy and not match important customer brand requirements.
